Mariachi Vargas Embraced by Michigan

I had to pinch myself during Mariachi Vargas’ concert at the Hill Auditorium Friday night to remind myself that I was in Ann Arbor, Michigan, home of the Wolverines, and not San Antonio, the capital of mariachi. Based on the audiences response, it sounded as if we were closer to the Mexican border versus the Canadian border. The audience sang in full force to Jorge Negrete and Jose Alfredo Jimenez classics played by Mariachi Vargas and were mesmerized by Arturo Vargas when he sang Por Ti Volare. Pepe, Sr. sang Paloma Querida and picked a man from Michoacan to join him. Surprisingly, the gentleman sang the entire song very well. The turn out was phenomenal. It was a full house, if not sold out, and the mix of cultures made it even more interesting. Everyone seemed to enjoy the concert immensely.
