A Mariachi-themed Art Exhibit was held at the Centro Cultural Aztlan as part of the 16th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza. Twenty-five artists participated and submitted pieces to be displayed at the Centro Cultural Aztlan. Three artists were chosen as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. First place was awarded to Hector Garza for his piece titled “Serenata a la Virgen.” His painting depicts a mariachi group serenading the Virgen de Guadalupe, a common scene among mariachi musicians throughout the year but especially on December 12, the Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Second place was awarded to Reefka Schneider for her piece titled “La Guitarron.” The painting is of a beautiful female mariachi musician playing the guitarron. Raul Servin received the 3rd place award for his piece titled “Mexican Music” which is a fun spirited piece that depicts a festive mariachi atmosphere. Mariachi Vocal Finalists’ Nizhoni Begay, Paola Davalos and Angela Mendoza selected the winning pieces. Many of the participating artists attended the event and shared a bit about the inspiration behind their piece. The exhibit was on display through December 6 at the Centro Cultural Aztlan at 1800 Fredericksburg Rd # 103. For more information call 210.432.1896 or visit www.mariachimusic.com.
