UTPA’s Mariachi Aztlan to have 3-day celebration

This weekend Januaray 14-16, Mariachi Aztlan will have a three-day “Celebration of Mexican Folk Music,” which will include traditional mariachi music as well as selections from Cruzar la Cara de la Luna. Mariachi Aztlan has won 1st place, multiple times, at the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza mariachi group competitions that take place every year in San Antonio, TX. This group was founded in 1989 by Dr. Dalia Guerra, dean of the university’s College of Arts and Humanities.  Mariachi Aztlan was created to promote Mexican folk music and Hispanic culture for the benefit of the students and community of South Texas. Under the direction of Francisco Loera, this group has traveled throughout Mexico and the US representing South Texas and the very best of university mariachi programs.

-WHAT: The University of Texas-Pan American Music Department presents the nationally award-winning UTPA Mariachi Aztlan in a “Celebration of Mexican Folk Music”

-WHEN: 7:30 p.m. Jan. 14 and 2 p.m. Jan. 15 and 16.

-WHERE: UTPA Fine Arts Auditorium, 1201 W. University Drive, Edinburg.
