There’s a lot happening in Texas throughout the year when it comes to mariachi. Here’s is a few upcoming events recommended by mariachimusic.com.

First on April 1-2 there will be two great events:

The first is UTPA’s FESTIBA Mariachi Workshops and Competitions held as part of the week-long literacy fest in Edinburg. The mariachi festival culminates in a concert featuring competition winners and Mariachi Cobre. Mariachi Cobre will play songs from their latest recordings including “Las Tres Huatecas” and “Popurri Balaju.” This is a real treat for Texas as Cobre doesn’t get to the Lone Star State too often. Texas State University in San Marcos will also host Feria del Mariachi the same weekend. This 2-day festival includes mariachi student workshops and competitions and a concert featuring competition winners, Texas State Mariachi ensembles and Mariachi 7 Leguas from the Rio Grande Valley. Mariachi 7 Leguas is an international, award winning mariachi group who was featured at San Antonio’s 16th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza last December. For more information on how to participate in this festival visit www.feriadelmariachi.com.

Mariachi Vargas is back in Texas in May with two performances in  Midland/Odessa on Friday, May 20 and Corpus Christi on Saturday, May 21. Student mariachi group and vocal competitions will be held in Corpus at Del Mar College prior to the concert. For more information on how to participate contact Liz Ortega-Ruiz at 361-878-7340 or email elizabeth.ortega@ccisd.us. Concert tickets for both events will be posted soon.
