UTPA Mariachi takes 1st in Houston Rodeo

The competition offers exposure to people outside the traditional mariachi realm and the chance to perform for the largest rodeo in the world. As a result, the event has opened doors of opportunity for the award winning group. The Houston Grand Opera (HGO) first saw Mariachi Aztlan perform at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo 2 years ago and were impressed with the group’s showmanship, style and musicianship. HGO invited them to perform in the first mariachi opera “To Cross the Face of the Moon”  in Houston last December. In addition, Mariachi Aztlan will return to Houston May 5 to perform with the Houston Symphony for the 75th Anniversary of MD Anderson.

Next up on the UTPA agenda is FESTIBA on April 1 in Edinburg with Mariachi Cobre on the roster. For more details contact Dr. Dahlia Guerra at guerrad@utpa.edu.
