The spirit of mariachi is captured in sculptures, paintings, drawings, craft work and photography during the annual mariachi-themed art exhibit, reception and competition at the Centro Cultural Aztlán on Tuesday, November 29 at 6:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and is part of San Antonio’s 17th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza that runs November 27 – December.
Special guest, Colorado based master artist, painter and sculpturist, Emanuel Martinez will display his work along with San Antonio based artists Rita Linda Abrego, Irma Al-Sadig Hernandez, Rosa Fernandez, Oscar Galvan, Jr., Hector Garza, Esther Guajardo, Maria Citlali Guido, Jeff Hull, Luis Hurtado, Paul Karam, Melinda Martinez, Guadalupe Muñoz, Angelina Pliego, Israel Rico, Cedric Rodriguez, Raul Servin, Steve Smith, Victor Tello, Jaclyn Valdez, Carla Veliz, Stephanie Zapata and Alicia Zavala Galvan.
The Mariachi-themed Art Exhibit is one of more than a dozen events taking place November 27 – December 4 as part of San Antonio’s 17th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza. The event is designed to encourage artists to create artwork reflective of the Hispanic culture utilizing mariachi themes. “It’s a way to capture the culture on canvas and other art forms,” says Malena Gonzalez-Cid, Executive Director of the Centro Cultural Aztlán. “Mariachi music is intertwined in the Hispanic culture through celebrations, religious holidays, Mother’s Day tributes and more. Participating artist capture the cultural uniqueness of the Hispanic market through mariachi music in their art work that will be on display at the Centro Cultural Aztlán through December 6.”
The 8-day mariachi music festival culminates with 2 concerts featuring the internationally acclaimed Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán at the Lila Cockrell Theater December 3-4.
