Tonight’s a big night in the Rio Grande Valley with some great performances lined up at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. Mariachi Vargas will perform their first show in Texas since October last year and audiences are in for a special treat. Vargas is stronger than ever before and what makes tonight’s show extra special is that they will be performing live in concert with energy that has been bottled up for the past 18 months. Fans have gathered here in McAllen from all over Texas to enjoy the show and see some amazing performances that Carlos Martinez has lined up for us this evening as musical director of the world’s greatest Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. In addition, several award-winning groups and vocalists from the Rio Grande Valley will have the honor of opening for the group.
Tonight’s show will start with Mariachi Nuevo Cascabel from Sharyland High School in Sharyland, Texas. The group will perform under the direction of Juan Carlos Lopez. National Geographic Magazine will be present to take photos of the group as they will be creating a photo story on moments of joy during these hard times. The photos will be part of a collection of photos from all over the country!
Ashley Treviño will make her debut performance on stage as the 2020 Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza Grand Champion Vocal Winner of the Year. Ashley just started her Freshman year at the University of Texas – Austin where she’s on the pre-dental track, studying biology. She has made the huge adjustment moving from McAllen to living the life as a college student in Austin. What does she miss the most? THE FOOD!!! Ashley will have her entire fan base of family and friends watching her this evening and we’re super excited to have this young, talented and beautiful lady representing the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza. Ashley will be accompanied by McHi Mariachi Oro from McAllen High School in McAllen, Texas who performs under the direction of Alex Trevino.
Also on the lineup is Mariachi Nuevo Santander (MNS) from Roma High School in Roma, Texas. MNS kicked off the year with an amazing perform on Eva Longoria’s Biden/Harris Latino Inaugural celebration earlier this year. They are 6-time Champs of the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza and perform under the direction of Eloy Garza.
And more phenomenal talent will be shared by Mariachi Aztlán & Ballet Folklorico UTRGV from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) in Edinburg, Texas. Aztlán has numerous accolades including performing at the White House, with the Houston Grand Opera and accompanying numerous artists including Aida Cuevas.
The group performs under the leadership of Dr. Dahlia Guerra, Frank Loera and Miguel Peña.
