The 9th Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Camp is back and will take place Monday, June 26 – Friday, June 30 at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts – Carlos Alvarez Theater. The camp is open to all students from throughout the U.S. who are interested in developing their skills primarily in performance and voice. Students will participate in a concert featuring soloists and group performances.
Students will experience a week full of activities in which will they learn from some of the best vocalists in the genre. Students will have the opportunity to participate in group learning sessions covering topics such as diction/pronunciation, intonation/pitch, style/interpretation, clarity/precision, stage presence and dynamics/volume. Private one on one sessions will also be available to target specific skills and techniques. Instructors are also prepared to help students identify their unique vocal strengths.
CAMP INSTRUCTORS
The camp is led by professional artists who possess unique skills needed for mariachi performance. Past Mariachi Extravaganza Camp maestros include the Tucson, Arizona based baritone Octavio Moreno and soprano Vanessa Alonzo from Houston. Both Alonzo and Moreno have made a name for themselves not only in the mariachi world but that of vocal performance as well. Also, joining for the first time this year as an instructor, is former Grand Champion Vocalist of the 21st Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza Alexa Posas.
REQUIREMENTS
– Students ages 12 – 21 are eligible to participate.
– Middle school through College age students can register
– Experienced vocalists, as well as students new to the genre, can apply
– Students must provide their own housing with friends, family or rental of an Air B&B or hotel
– The camp is open to students from throughout the U.S.
– Students must register at the link below by the early registration deadline of May 31 by 12 midnight. The registration fee for the full week, M-F, is $200. Students can register after this date but the rate will increase to $250.
CAMP RECITAL
The Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Camp will host a recital on Friday, June 30th in which students will showcase their stills and talent. The recital will feature group and solo performances from camp participants. The recital will take place at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts – Carlos Alvarez Studio Theatre. Tickets will be sold at tobincenter.org or at the box office on the day of show.
Registration for the camp is now open. A maximum of 50 registrants will be accepted. Vocalists who are interested in competing in the 29th Annual Mariachi Extravaganza are encouraged to register in preparation for this year’s event!!!!
THE VENUE
The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts – Carlos Alvarez Studio Theatre – is a 230 seat theater located in downtown San Antonio right on the river walk. Students will have the opportunity to enjoy walks on the river prior to the start of the camp each morning or during lunch. Students are strongly encouraged to bring their own brown bag lunch every day as there are no quick places to eat near the theater.
