Marcelino Ortega, director of Mariachi Perla de Occidente for over half a century, died April 24 after a long bout with kidney failure. Perla de Occidente is best known for accompanying Pedro Infante and Javier Solís, and as a training ground for groups like Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán and Mariachi México de Pepe Villa. (more…)

The Mother’s Day tradition we know today, however, is barely a century old. The United States began celebrating its Mother’s Day in 1908, and Mexico only began celebrating its Día de las Madres in 1922. U.S. Mother's Day is always the second Sunday of May, while in Mexico, it’s always the 10th of May, so the two holidays often fall on different days of the week. El 1o de septiembre de 2014, el Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán lanzó su más reciente producción, el disco titulado Boleros, Baladas y Bachatas. La grabación fue hecha esta primavera en el estudio capitalino del ex Buki, Joél Solís. Siete de los 14 arreglos son de Carlos Martínez, cuatro de Miguel Ángel Barrón, dos de Pepe Martínez Jr. y uno de Rubén Fuentes. El disco contiene siete boleros, tres baladas y cuatro bachatas, géneros que mezcla y yuxtapone de manera interesante y poco tradicional. (more…)

On September 1st, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán released the group’s latest album, Boleros, Baladas y Bachatas. The recording was made earlier this year in the Mexico City studio of ex-Los Bukis member Joél Solís. Seven of the arrangements are by Carlos Martínez, four by Miguel Ángel Barrón, two by Pepe Martínez Jr., and one by Rubén Fuentes. The CD contains seven boleros, three baladas, and four bachatas — genres it mixes and juxtaposes in interesting and untraditional ways. (more…)

Brazil is not a country normally associated with mariachi music, but that is changing quickly. Southwestern College’s Mariachi Garibaldi recently participated in Brazil’s Festival Internacional de Folclore. The San Diego, California community college group, directed by Dr. Jeff Nevin, performed for six consecutive days (July 26-31) at this international event held in Nova Petrópolis, located in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. The 42nd annual celebration presented diverse folk ensembles from different parts of Brazil, the Americas, Europe, and the Orient. (more…)
